A sunny and bright Stute welcomed Melbourne for the first match of the season.
The U12's had trained well throughout September, and were keen to see some real action. Despite missing both last year's players of the season, Zack Cranson due to a move to Hampshire, and Olly Davidson, recently crowned Erewash junior sportsman of the year taking part in a County swimming meet, the Elks played some wonderful rugby.
From the whistle, Ilkeston refused to submit to the bigger Melbourne forward pack, who rucked and mauled to good effect.
Harry Taylor was a Terrier throughout, and Josh Elder at fly-half was excellent leading both the forwards and the backs to good effect.
Mid-way through the first half was witnessed and outstanding flowing backs move by Ilkeston, finished by Mix Marzano, who converted his own try. Resolute defence saw Ilkeston refuse to let Melbourne score, despite a number of powerful attempts.
The whole team played well, but special mention must be made to Josh Brooks, Laurence Pilkington and Daniel Sloane from the forwards, whilst from the backs Harry Taylor, Josh Elder and Pym Westrick, all of whom were superb.
In the second game, Ilkeston gave many of their less experienced players a full game, as did Melbourne, and all rose to the occasion. Melbourne won this close encounter 2 tries to 1, with a solo try from Harry Taylor, converted by Josh Elder, giving the Elks their only score of the game.
Man of the Match : Josh Elder for excellent decision making and all-round play.
