Under 11’s qualify for the NLD Cup for the 2nd consecutive year

On Sunday at the Stute the Elks under 11’s were drawn in a tough qualifying group - Pool B - which also contained Derby, Matlock and Bakewell - squad present: Aneurin Lings, Ben Clements, Charlie Clarke, Chris Goodall, Elliott Harvey, Ellis Thomas, Fraser Douglas, George Beardsley, Jack Marshall, Jack Mason- Barton (“Ed), James Semken, Liam Soar, Michael Hayes, Sam Hines, Warwick Waudby.
Matlock 5 Ilkeston 0 – what a good game of rugby this turned out to be, a very tight match throughout with the Matlock winger going over in the first half to put Matlock 1 try up. Elks were giving as good as they got though, but just not as fluid with their passing as the opposition – as half time came closer, it was obvious that the opposition danger man was operating out on the wing. During the half time break a couple of the Elks were taken to one side and given some words of wisdom by head coach Nick Bacon, this seemed to do the trick as their winger was nullified in the second half. Some good strong forward play by George, Liam, Michael, Elliott, Sam, Fraser and Warwick throughout the game especially in the second half kept most of the possession with Ilkeston, and when the backs came into play – Charlie, Aneurin, Ellis, Ben, Chris, Jack, Ed and James, tried to make the advantage pay, but unfortunately to no avail. Man of the match was given to Jack Mason Barton (“Ed”) – who’s tackling out on the wing especially in the second half, kept Ilkeston in contention. Although losing this game Elks scored a bonus point for being within one try of the opposition.
Ilkeston 14 Bakewell 31 – in contrast to our opening game, the Elks lost their way a bit in this one with a disjointed performance, Bakewell moving the ball out to their backs at every opportunity, with a very good passing and running game, we were in danger of being overrun, Aneurin came the closest to emulating this with a clever dummy and pass to set the back line moving, but we were just not doing it enough. Warwick picked up the gauntlet and started running at the opposition, possibly scoring one of our best tries of the day, after 3 or 4 phases of play, Charlie came within yards of the try line, before being tackled, but with great support play Warwick scooped the ball up and crashed over the line, he soon followed this up with a second, Charlie making both conversions. Man of this match was awarded to Warwick Waudby.
Ilkeston 26 Derby 7 – what was turning out to be a disappointing day, brightened up somewhat with this final performance against Derby with George running in a trademark try after storming through the Derby defence in the very first minute to score. Mention should also be made of Ellis, who was absolutely fearless, sporting a bandaged head at one stage between games after another collision, he soon tossed that aside and showed true grit throughout the day. Elks were never in danger of losing this one and Jack Marshall showed some good handling and running skills, along with Charlie who ran in his by now perfunctory try (also scoring all 3 of his conversions), Warwick was turning into a try machine, scoring a further two to give him four on the day. Man of this match went to Jack Marshall who’s balance, handling, awareness of space and running ability kept Derby on the back foot.
Final pool positions – Matlock (14 pts), Ilkeston (6pts), Bakewell (5pts), Derby (5pts). NLD Cup finals to be played on March 27th 2011.
