Elks were drawn in a tough group, but showed some good fighting spirit albeit later in the day, all of their opponents knowing they were in a game; our hats go off to all of the teams, their coaches and spectators who enjoyed some very good Rugby throughout.
With Derby unfortunately having to pull out in the week all teams who did turn up in our group were given a 2-0 win, and we started our first game against Ashbourne, but were undone in the end by a couple of outstanding players, who seemed to have rocket powered boots, we’ve got some good runners in our team, but they just couldn’t catch them. Although the 5-0 scoreline flattered our opposition somewhat, indeed even the Matlock referee mentioned it was not as one sided as the final scoreline suggested!
A better performance in our second match against Paviors saw us holding them to 1-1 for most of the match, and seeing Paviors had beaten Ashbourne earlier, it was a definite step in the right direction, Charlie Clarke going over for the try. One of the lasting memories of this match however was the tackle put in as one of the Paviors backs was running down the wing with 5 metres to go to our try line, Connor Jowitt just stopped him in his tracks, the attack came to a shuddering halt! However another attack late in the game by the opposition finally broke our defence and we lost a very tight game in the end 2-1.
At this juncture the team were given some words of wisdom by head coach Nick Bacon, before we entered our final game against group leaders Matlock A – this seemed to do the trick and a much improved team went in to the lead with a fine run and try by Chris Goodall, we held this lead until near the end when Matlock went over for their try – final score 1-1.
After the games, Michael Hayes (forward) and Jack Marshall (back) were acknowledged for their efforts and support throughout the games. Man of the match medals went to newcomers Connor Jowitt and Luke Jeans, both of whom impressed with their no nonsense tackling - for players who have not been playing Rugby for that long, it bodes very well for the rest of this season and going into the next one!
A final thanks to all of our squad, it’s good to see them regularly turning up for training and matches alike, and gives us a great platform for the future – the next matches coming along are in the NLD Cup for which we qualified and is at Derby on Sunday 27th March.
