Well this was in many ways a repeat of last week, except Ilkeston's role was reversed.
Once again we came up against a very good side. Ilkeston demonstrated their attacking intent from the 'get-go'. Running hard and straight to score quickly. Then it was defence time, and all day the boys showed that their tackling has come on superbly.
So in what way was it a repeat of last week? Well against Ashfield it was the Elks who were able to shine at the breakdown, recycling the ball effectively time after time against a resolute defence, and Ashfield who ran in their tries with only one or two phases. Here, Moderns played us at our own game and their passing was excellent and their recycling was very dependable (as many as a dozen phases at one point). Then again, it had to be in the face of resolute defence from the home team. Perhaps Moderns moved the ball too wide at times, for Ilkeston were able to employ those most effective defenders of all, the left and right hand touchlines to bolster their already impressive performance on the back foot. In contrast, Ilkeston ran hard and straight for the main part and that resulted in a number of simple tries.
So, a fine attacking display by both teams and the region seems to be producing a good standard of play at U9s that we are all going to benefit from and enjoy this season.
