AstroTurf match.

Long Eatons pitches have taken a bit of a battering recently with the bad weather so a relocation to Long Eaton school happened so that the U7s could play on the AstroTurf, we made our way there and all the U7s warmed up together ready for some rugby. The thing I always enjoy is seeing old friends around the place and who doesn’t enjoy the banter of a bit of local very friendly rivalry! ?
We had three pitches and 6 teams set up and we got stuck in to some brilliant rugby. 2 Ilkeston teams 3 Long Eaton teams and a Baabaas team. The first matches of three got underway and it was clear from the off that the standard of rugby was to be high. It was high pace and high skills all round. The Baabaas, after an initially shy of each other start gelled really fast and and made a brilliant and challenging team for the resident Long Eaton players. Lots of running and getting used to playing on Astro happened in that first match. Olivia, impressing coaches both from Ilkeston and Long Eaton with her speed and determination carrying the ball. The first game came to and end and the rotation happened. Half the teams moved around and faced a new opponent who stayed on their pitches.
The standard can only be described as raising for the second matches. This time I watched an Ilkeston team taking on Long Eaton. Passing challenges had to be given to both teams to slow down the speed the tries were pouring in and to raise the skill levels of all the players. This match once again saw Zain taking on the role of the cleaner. Not a loose ball got passed him and his ability to read the flow of a game shows skills beyond his years!
Rotation again and more skills on display to be seen for all. The combination of Eva, Isla, and Niamh drawing attention and compliments from the Long Eaton coaches who lamented their lack of girls. #thisgirlcan
Everyone enjoyed their matches and dealt brilliantly with the odd scenario of playing on Astro, it’s a different surface and slipping can happen all of easily but apart from a few bumps and bruises no major issues for any team.
So after much pondering I have decided that this week, and earning his first Quilter Kids First Rugby green lace, my player of the week is Zain for not only his hard work on the pitch but for his sportsmanship, his clear enjoyment of being out there, and his support of his team mates. Zain consistently shows off the TREDS values of our sport and is the first of our players to earn a lace. Well done Zain.
