Elks maintained their unbeaten home record but only after a tough battle with Huntingdon, eventually winning 23-19.

The Royal British Legion were at the Stute as the club remembered those who fell from Hallam Fields during past conflicts. The club also fell silent to remember Kit Taylor who sadly passed away last Sunday.

Elks kicked off with the slope but defences were on top for the opening 10 mins, Huntingdon were aggressive at the breakdown and turned Elks over gaining a penalty in a kickable position, this was slotted to give Huntingdon the lead after 11 mins. 0-3

Elks used the slope well to get back on the attack and this time Huntingdon were penalised, Jono Falls stepped up and kicked the penalty to level things at 3-3 after 14 mins.

Elks were soon back on the attack and had good pressure in the Huntingdon 22, the ball was recycled and moved quickly right to find Isaac Taylor in space to go over for the first try after 19 mins, extras missed making it 8-3.

The Elks were now enjoying a dominant period and from a line out caught by Steve Quinn attacked through the backs, Greg Taylor dummied the rushing defence and ran in under the posts, extras added by Falls to stretch the lead to 15-3 after 24 mins.

It continued to be all Elks as they attacked again through I Taylor on the right, he fed Chris Tipton who carried on the move, Tipton off loaded to Jacob Heath to run through and score on 32 mins, extras missed to make it 20-3.

This sparked Huntingdon into an immediate response and from an Elks penalty they kicked deep into the Elks 22, the line out was taken and the ball moved into midfield, their centre broke through and scored on 36 mins, extras added to make it 20-10.

Huntingdon grew in confidence from this score and started to win collisions at the breakdown, Elks were penalised just before half time and Huntingdon opted for goal, this was cleanly struck to reduce the lead to 20-13 at half time.

Simon Hallam and Dan Rollins were replaced by Paul Shoebridge and Kartar Soar.

Huntingdon kicked off with the slope but Elks had the first attack of the half, good work from Matt McGuire and then G Taylor took Elks into the opposition 22, the attack was held up in the corner but Huntingdon were offside in midfield and Fall slotted the kick to make it 23-13 after 43 mins.

Both sides were battling hard for ascendency but defences were staying strong, Tom Pottinger replaced Tom Southall. Play was mainly concentrated between the 10 metre line as both sides conceded penalties allowing the defending side to clear.

Huntingdon were stepping up the work rate and making ground down the slope, Elks defence was equally strong with Adam Corcoran halting several attacks.

Elks halted another attack, this time illegally and they took the shot at goal to reduce the deficit to 23-16 after 58 mins.

Huntingdon were starting to get on top at the breakdown and the Elks were conceding penalties under pressure. Tom Southall returned for Isaac Taylor.

Elks supporters were starting to get nervous seeing a 20-3 lead disappear and Huntingdon playing well down the slope, penalties were still costing the Elks dearly and following a high tackle Huntingdon had a kickable penalty, this was slotted over to make it 23-19 after 68 mins.

The final 10 minutes were frantic and littered with mistakes as Huntingdon saw a chance for victory, the Elks despite not creating many more chances were able to close out the game for a very hard earned victory.

At 20-3 up it was looking like a comfortable victory but Huntingdon battled back really well and were certainly worth their losing bonus point.

McGuire Tipton and Corcoran all played well up front but Jono Falls slotted some important kicks and made some good decisions when we were under pressure so gets this week’s Man of the Match.

Thank you to all those who turned up to celebrate Kits life. Tamas rendition of the Haka has gone viral!

Tough games ahead as we have away trips to Syston and Kettering with Paviors in the NLD cup sandwiched between the league games. Next week away at Syston 2.15 kick off.
