Long Eaton were the first to get points on the board when a deep kick into their 22 was returned by the rapid full back who broke through two tackles to score in the corner. The Elks then began to get control of the game, veteran half back pairing of Jon Doughty and Tama Keane were dictating play. After sustained pressure and a solid scrum on the LE 5m line, Jon D gathered the ball from the base of the scrum to crash over, Jack Broughton converted.
The Elks were dominating all aspects of play and after Jack Broughton had marched the LE full back a full 20m over his try line, from the subsequent scrum the ball came through the backs to see Rob Flowerdew cross the line, try converted.
Wholesale changes were made at Half Time, including a move to a junior sized pitch. This didn't stop The Elks who scored again through Captain Jon D, who yet again after a solid scrum picked up and crashed over, try converted. Big Red who was unleashed at half time, made two trademark storming runs only to be hauled down by several LE players.
The lead was further increased when good hands from the forwards released Si Brown who danced through two tackles to score in the corner, Jack B converting well from the touch line. further changes were made to ensure all players got decent game time. The scrum which was dominant throughout, was nullified after having to go uncontested. This didn't affect play too much and The Elks stretched their lead further when John Booth, who was excellent at full back stormed through to score.
LE registered the final points with a converted try in the last 5 mins. Final score 12 - 33 and a well deserved victory for The Elks. So the season begins in earnest next week with the first league game vs East Leake at The Stute.
Every player played their part in this victory, solid scrums and line out from the forwards, and the backs looked good when they had clean ball. MOM went to Captain Jon D, who scored two tries but also had an excellent game all round.
